The Big Idea

The Big Idea is a national competition where students will plan a business that creates positive social outcomes. You don’t need to have an idea to get started…all you need is passion to make positive change in your community!

This is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed as you will be provided with training, get to learn from industry leaders and also stand a chance to win some awesome prizes including the opportunity to be fast-tracked to the final stage of the recruitment process in the PwC Australia graduate program!

As if that is not enough, The Big Idea is also a Curtin Extra recognised program which means you stand a chance to gain official transcript recognition for your participation.

*Students have to be in their final year to be eligible for fast-tracking to the PwC Australia graduate program. If a student is not in their final year and is in their penultimate year, PwC would look to fast track them for a Vacation program / Internship opportunity. Students who are not in their penultimate or final year will be invited to discover more about PwC at one of their Academies.

Workshop 1 – Exploration: Saturday 17 August 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm

Workshop 2 – Developing the idea: Saturday 7 September 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm

Workshop 3 – Getting started: Tuesday 1 October 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm (tuition-free week)

Workshop 4 – Sustaining the venture & Pitching: Friday 4 October 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm (tuition-free week)

Internal judging: Tuesday 22 October 2019 from 4 pm to 7 pm

Semi-final judging: Wednesday 13 November 2019 or Thursday 14 November 2019

Final judging and awards evening: Thursday 28 November 2019

Curtin Extra

The Big Idea is a Curtin Extra recognised program which means you stand a chance to gain official transcript recognition for your participation. More information, including eligibility requirements, will be provided after you sign up.

Entry guidelines

  • You need to be a Curtin student.
  • You can apply as an individual or as part of a team.
  • If you are applying as an individual but would prefer to work in a team, you will have the opportunity to form a team during the course of the program.
  • Teams have to wholly comprise of either postgraduate or undergraduate students.
  • There are two streams that you can apply under – the ‘development’ stream and the ‘pitch-ready’ stream.
  • If you are applying to the ‘development’ stream, you do not need to have an idea in mind before applying; you will be given the opportunity to develop one during the course of the program.
  • If you are applying to the ‘pitch-ready’ stream, you need to have completed (or be very close to completing) a business plan and be at the stage where you are able to pitch your idea to judges. Attendance at the workshops (see ‘important dates’ tab) is optional if you are applying in this stream.
  • Finalists (as selected by The Big Issue and their judging panel) will be provided with return economy class flights (including all taxes and charges) from Perth to Melbourne to attend the finalist judging round.
  • Winners (as selected by The Big Issue) will have the opportunity to be fast-tracked to the final stage of the recruitment process in the PwC Australia graduate program (subject to meeting eligibility criteria of the PwC Australia Graduate Program). Please note that students have to be in their final year to be eligible for fast-tracking to the PwC Australia graduate program. If a student is not in their final year and is in their penultimate year, PwC would look to fast track them for a Vacation program / Internship opportunity.
