Blackboard Student app

With the Blackboard Student App (Bb Student) you can access your units and stay connected to your lecturers and other students, wherever and whenever you want.

Bb Student features and tools

The features and tools which are available are dependent on the tools currently available within each individual Blackboard unit. Some functions that are enabled in your unit may not be available on Bb Student. This is mainly due to the limitations of some mobile devices.

  • Activity Stream
    See an up-to-the-minute list of important unit activity including new content, announcements, and grades. The activity stream automatically prioritizes the items to help you focus on the tasks that you want to take care of right away.
  • Discussions
    Students can keep up with current unit discussions by reading forum posts. Users can respond and attach media, in addition to creating new threaded discussions.
  • Grades
    Get real-time access to grades and feedback within an individual course.
  • Courses
    View all of your courses. Tap a course to view its content and assignments.
  • Course Content
    Easily scan unit materials and access what you need. Tap a piece of content to view its full details. You can view Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF content that your instructors include in units.
  • Assignments
    View, complete, and submit assignments right from the app.
  • Due Dates
    See upcoming assignments and tests across all of your units. Work is colour coded by unit and grouped by day and week. You can quickly see what’s due and prioritize your work.

iPad instructions

  • Go to the iTunes App Store either on your iPad or laptop.
  • Search for “Bb Student by Blackboard”
  • Download the free Bb Student app.
  • If you download the app onto a laptop, sync your iPad with your laptop.
  • Open the app and enter “Curtin University” in the field provided.
  • Login using your Curtin ID.

iPhone instructions

  • Go to the iTunes App Store either on your iPhone or laptop.
  • Search for “Bb Student by Blackboard”
  • Download the free Bb Student app.

Frequently asked questions

How much will it cost me to use the Bb Student app?

The app is FREE to download however you may be charged your mobile data rates if you access your Blackboard units off campus. Alternatively you can access Curtin’s wireless (wi-fi) network when you are on campus.

What will my units look like in Bb Student?

When you login to Bb Student , you will see a mobile version of your Blackboard unit home page. This will differ depending on the mobile device you are using.

Can I download files from Bb Student?

Yes, common file types such as Word, PDF and PowerPoint will open automatically on your device but there is an option to open them up/download in third party applications on iOS and Android devices.

Can I upload files using my mobile?

The ability to upload files to Bb Student is currently limited to the capabilities of the device that you have.

File uploads are normally limited to images and videos.

Can I upload my assignments via my mobile?

Assignments and tests can include attachments from your mobile device. For iOS, photos from your camera roll can be uploaded and submitted. For Android, all files available in the file system can be attached and included in assignments. The maximum file size you can upload is 25 MB.

Can I play multimedia content (Flash) on my device?

The compatibly of some media types is device specific. Currently the iOS platform for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch does not play Adobe Flash for proprietary reasons imposed by Apple Inc.

You will need to check your device to see what types of multimedia it will play successfully.

Can I use my mobile to post to blogs, wikis or journals?

Not from within the app. These tools launch in a webpage.

Can I take quizzes or tests on Bb Student?

No. It is not advisable to do such activities using mobile platforms at present. We recommended a traditional web browser for tests that launch in a web page.
