Join us as we hit the campus and ask Curtin students about respect!

Let’s hear what students have to say about the following questions:

🤔 What is respect to you?
💡 What does respect at Uni look like?
👀 How do you show respect?
💭 What does respect feel like?

We’ll explore these questions and more, shedding light on important topics like consent and what respect the Curtin community expect to receive whilst at Uni.

Respect is a deeply personal experience, varying from one person to another. Above all, Respect is about showing consideration and regard for regardless of differences, and based on what is meaningful and appropriate to them.

Let’s talk, Consent!

Consent isn’t just for sex; it’s about respecting personal boundaries in all interactions. Everyone deserves to feel safe, included, and valued. When asking for consent, remember the acronym FRIES:

🍟 Freely Given: Without force, pressure, manipulation, or substances.
🍟 Reversible: You can change your mind, no matter what.
🍟 Informed: You must be informed and aware before consenting.
🍟 Enthusiastic: Only do what you want.
🍟 Specific: Saying yes to one thing doesn’t mean yes to all.

Meet Everline, a nursing student, who has approached her dream career, with a hands-on approach and commitment to lifelong learning. 📚✨

Everline was initially motivated to study nursing by her desire to help people and wear scrubs. Initially starting with a Certificate IV and Diploma in Health and Nursing Studies, she enjoyed the idea of gaining an understanding of the healthcare industry at first, to see if she wanted to further explore it as a career. Once she began, she was hooked and her subsequent jobs in hospitals have provided a first-hand look at both the challenges and fulfilment of healthcare work. After her meaningful experience and time in the healthcare industry, Everline solidified her passion for Nursing. This practical experience not only helped shape her future but also gave her a deep appreciation for the impact nurses have on patients’ lives at an early stage of her career.

Transitioning from the hands-on focus of TAFE to the theoretical nature of university was a significant shift for Everline. Despite the initial challenge of adjusting to more writing and reading, entering her second year of university has given her a newfound confidence as she is more organised and on top of her assignments than ever before. Another challenge Everline has overcome throughout her academic journey is that she used to consider herself a germaphobe and struggled with bodily fluids. However, today working in a hospital has completely defeated this fear and is accustomed to it.

Looking ahead this year, Everline is most excited about the lab classes, where she can work on mannequins, gain further practical skills and immediately apply them to her work, whilst of course learning with friends who make university enjoyable.

Ever felt uncomfortable because of a friend’s behaviour? 🤔

Don’t just watch, be part of the solution! Be an active bystander! Remember the 4 D’s:

🗣️ Direct Action – Call out inappropriate behaviour by telling the person to stop or checking in with the victim. Remain calm and polite, and address the issue as a group if possible.

💬 Distraction – Engage the perpetrator in conversation to allow the target to move away or friends to intervene. Use a fake excuse or redirect attention.

👤 Delegate – If you’re hesitant, get someone else to step in, such as venue staff or the Safer Community team.

⏰ Delay – If direct action is risky, walk away and report the incident when safe. It’s never too late to act against inappropriate behaviour.

Being proactive can prevent assault or misconduct. Break the silence.

Meet Zavier, @curtinguild Queer Officer who is here to teach us about pronouns and deadnaming. Some common misconceptions about pronouns are:

❌ Pronouns are new.
✅ Pronouns have been around for centuries and are an essential part of how we communicate and affirm people’s identities.

❌ Pronouns are only relevant for non-cis people.
✅ Knowing and using a person’s correct pronouns fosters inclusion, makes people feel respected and valued, and affirms their gender identity. Using pronouns shows people you care.

❌ Using people’s dead names is okay if you are unsure.
✅ Deadnaming people is discrimination. If you are unsure, ask.

Everyone deserves the right to feel safe, included and valued on campus – and it all starts with respect.

Meet Monika, a passionate Bachelor of Science student whose career path was inspired by her hardworking registered nurse mother. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for healthcare and a strong motivation to pursue a career in the field. 👩‍⚕️

In 2019, just before the pandemic, Monika entered nursing directly after high school as she was eager to get involved in campus life and begin working on her dream. Throughout her studies, Monika found the practical aspects of nursing, particularly the placements, to be the most fulfilling. She particularly relished her work with patients in theatre and holds this space as a potential future profession. The concept of acuity, which signifies the severity of a patient’s condition, is a vital aspect of theatre nursing that both intrigues and challenges Monika, yet she finds it immensely rewarding. ✨

Balancing placements with assessments was a significant challenge for Monika, requiring her to manage her time effectively. With nursing placements demanding 40 hours a week, maintaining a work-life balance and meeting assessment deadlines became particularly challenging. Her advice to others facing similar challenges is to start assignments early and seek support when needed. She cherishes the close-knit group of friends she made in her nursing cohort, who shared late-night study sessions and coffee runs, providing a support system during tough times.

Despite the demanding nature of her degree, Monika is a natural-born overachiever and has spent a lot of time giving back to the community through Curtin Volunteers (CV). Although initially signing up as a way to involve herself with campus life, she unexpectedly discovered Curtin Extra, which gave her the possibility of earning recognition for her work.📚

Curtin Extra encompasses diverse programs beyond CV, including Mentoring, scholarships, and leadership groups, offering students like Monika a chance to create lasting memories and friendships outside study whilst gaining tangible certificates and badges to increase your employability.
