Welcome to the Offshore Student Guide
Curtin's offshore programs make it possible for you to study a Curtin degree closer to home. Courses are available at Curtin's external campuses as well as at a large range of partner institutions across the globe.
Curtin is an Australian leader in the delivery of offshore international education. Together with our partners in many different countries, Curtin offers high quality educational programs that were designed to service the needs of students and industry. Regardless of where you study, you will receive the high standard of education and the international recognition associated with Curtin degrees.
Offshore Programs
Our partners and faculty work together to provide services that will support your studies. Although the Curtin website contain information that you will find interesting, you should bear in mind that specific services have been created to assist students studying in offshore programs. The offshore programs page was designed to provide fast access to partner, course and faculty pages.
Curtin Campuses
Curtin has campuses located in Malaysia and Sydney, with a new campus currently being developed in Singapore. Please visit the campus websites for more information.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Students who have previously undertaken studies at diploma or university level may apply for recognition of prior learning.
- RPL and exemptions are usually assessed on qualifications and transcripts submitted at the time of application. The university's policy on RPL is to recognise a student's previous studies while at the same time ensure that a student completes a sufficient number of units to grant an award.
- RPL granted will be recorded on your academic record for the course either by an entry showing the total amount of RPL granted (expressed in credits) or by a statement of the individual units from which the student has been exempted.
If you have further queries on RPL or exemptions, contact Curtin's partner institution in your country.

Examination and Assessment
Assessment includes assignments and final end-of-term examinations. In some units, there is also a mid-term examination. For more information, visit Curtin's grading system.
Continuous assessment
Assignments are set by your lecturer at regular intervals. You must submit the assignments by the deadlines or get approval from the lecturer for late submissions. Extensions for assignments will only be granted in special circumstances such as illness.
Examinations
End-of-term examinations are conducted during the University's official examination period. The examination period is confirmed one year in advance and can be found in the Curtin Handbook and Academic Calendar. Examination timetables (with details on venues and time), are distributed to students five weeks before the start of examinations. Examinations are held during the day or the evening. It is the students' responsibility to be available for all examination sessions during the examination period.
Students will not be permitted to sit their examinations at alternative times for any reason, including travelling overseas and other commitments. If a student has two examinations scheduled at the same time or has more than two papers scheduled on the same day, the student will be allowed to sit one of the papers earlier than the scheduled time.
Deferred examinations/assessments
Deferment of an examination is not automatic. Students may be permitted by the relevant Board of Examiners to defer (postpone) an examination or other assessment where there are circumstances outside of their control.
- A student's overall performance may be taken into account in giving permission to defer an examination.
- Applications for deferment on health grounds or as a result of extenuating (not predictable) circumstances must be submitted no later than seven days after the end of the relevant examination period. Where appropriate, medical certificates should be attached to the application.
- Dates of deferred examinations are listed in your course materials.
- A student who does not sit for the scheduled deferred exam has no claim to a further examination.
Please contact Curtin's partner institution regarding submission of application for deferred examination/assessment.
Supplementary assessment
If a student fails a unit, a supplementary examination or other forms of further assessment may be granted at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. No written application for supplementary examinations will be considered.
Our guidelines for a supplementary examination are:
- the student's semester weighted average must be at least 50%
- the marks obtained for the unit must be between 45% and 49%.
A student who does not sit for a scheduled supplementary examination in a unit has no claim to a further examination.
Your results for the unit will be replaced with the grade PX with your original mark if you pass the unit or F with your original mark if you fail the supplementary assessment.
* Supplementary examinations are not awarded in some postgraduate courses. Please check with your partner institution or your course materials for further information.
Graduation
Course completion occurs when a Board of Examiners determines a student has completed all course requirements. This date appears on the letter of course completion and the statement of academic record as the date "completed". Students are sent a free copy of the Letter of Course Completion as soon as the Board of Examiners confirms completion of all course requirements.
Graduation is the date on which Curtin Council presents you with your award. This date appears on a award certificate (testamur) as the date "conferred".
On completing all course requirements, you are required to complete an Intention to Graduate form. Graduation packages will be sent to you once approval has been granted by the Schools.
Once conferred, graduates have the choice of being presented with their testamur by the Chancellor at a ceremony immediately following the date of conferral or receiving it by mail. For the latest graduation ceremony dates visit the Curtin Graduations website.
